WHAT IS CHANGÜÍ ??
Changüí is a style of Cuban music which originated in the early 19th century in the eastern region of Guantánamo Cuba. Its origins can be traced back to the 1800s, arising in the sugar cane refineries and in the rural communities populated by slaves. Changüí is to Cuba & Latin America what the Blues & early Jazz is to American music; the roots! As with other rural Cuban music forms, it started out as party music. Changüisero's tell us that the parties could last for days if not weeks and in the spirit of that we will be bringing to Los Angeles for the very first time the 1st Annual Changüí festival!!

CHANGÜÍ MAJADERO with JOSE ANDRES "EL SINSONTE"
From Guantanamo Cuba & Los Angeles
AFRO-CUBAN CHANGÜÍ MUSIC

“Captivating and liberating,” (PopMatters) the infectiously danceable LA-based band Changüí Majadero has distinguished itself with a modern take on the Afro-Cuban musical tradition of changüí, the 19th century foundation of contemporary salsa informed by African influences.

Founded by tres guitarist and vocalist Gabriel García, the band was the result of García’s pivotal journey to the Guantanamo region of Cuba, where he learned the changüí from the living masters of the style and was inspired to spread the spirit of Cuban folkloric music mixed with a dash of East Los Angeles grit. Changüí Majadero has played in such disparate settings such as Lincoln Center, SF Jazz, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and even Dodger Stadium. The band released their self-titled debut recording in 2016 that encompasses compositions bristling with propulsive rhythms and evocative vocals — a celebrated release that All About Jazz called “joyous music, deserving greater recognition.”

Flying in directly from Guantanamo Cuba, the legendary Godfather of Changüí José Andrés "El Sinsonte" will be joining Changüí Majadero at the 1st Annual Changüí Festival.

LOS HERMANOS ARANGO
From Havana, Cuba
AFRO-CUBAN-JAZZ – FOLKLORIC CUBAN MUSIC

“The insular grace of Cuba condenses and expands in the voices, instruments, and bodies of Los Hermanos Arango.”
– El Granma Newspaper, Pedro de La Hoz, Havana, Cuba 2014

Los Hermanos Arango hail from Guanabacoa, a municipality in Cuba characterized by a high level of musical and afro-religious tradition. The group was created in 2003 by world-renown bassist Feliciano Arango (Emiliano Salvador, NG la Banda, Maraca, etc.) and his siblings, percussionist Eugenio, guitarist Ignacio, and vocalist Cristina.

The Arango family brings more than 30 years of combined touring experience performing Cuban music and jazz of the highest caliber around the globe. Los Hermanos Arango offers a diverse palette of authentic afro-folkloric rhythms and chants merged with intricate, yet accessible jazz.

Malawi's Zomba Prison Project compilation among BEST NEW WORLD MUSIC releases

World music fans have always had a special fondness for Cuban music and now the recent thaw in relations between the United States and Cuba is bound to give the genre a huge boost. Fans who haven’t listened to much Cuban music since the release of the Buena Vista Social Club tracks will really be tickled by this set from the Los Angeles-based group fronted by singer and guitarist Gabriel Garcia. Changüí music is a forerunner to salsa and it is rich with the Caribbean rhythms that have their roots in parts of Africa. Garcia has a masters degree in Afro-Latin music, and what you have in this set is  dance music that instantly conjures an image of a sultry Havana night club where the bodies sway until dawn. While the emphasis is on rhythm and the dance floor, Garcia’s acoustic guitar playing, clear as a bell and flawless, is a melodic delight unto itself.
